Cluj - Napoca City
highlights In the 15th
century the town was called "the treasure town" as it was a famous
artistic and cultural centre. In 1581 the higher education system
was initiated for the first time in Cluj. In 1792 the first theatre
actors founded their professional group and in 1821 the theatre was
even granted a building of its own. |

Transylvania Ethnographic Museum In Hoia Forest, Taietura
Turcului
Was founded in 1922, initially displaying exhibits from Banat,
Transylvania, Bihor, and Maramures. The museum is located in an
Empire style building (18th century) and it has
collections referring to traditional popular habits and clothes
specific to the area. It also has an open-air section in Hoia forest
that includes over 130 houses and popular technical devices. |
The
Botanical Garden
in Cluj Napoca is the largest and most complex one in Romania,
representing one of the most famous sightseeing places in the city,
also being one of the most renowned in the south-east of Europe. It
has numerous plants species from all seven continents (over 11.000
species). |

Parcul Mare (Great Park) A very
nice and quite place, you can also rent boats there.
The Transylvania History Museum St. C. Daicoviciu 2
is the most important museum of its kind in this part of the
country. It included several sections arranged in chronological
order from ancient to contemporary times.
"Bastionul Croitorilor" Avram Iancu Street
Is the only tower of the fortress that was preserved as a whole
during the centuries. The denomination of this tower comes form the
guild of tailors that attended to its maintenance. |
"Natia"
Reformed Church in Cluj Napoca was erected in Gothic style
in 1486 in 1516 by King Matei corvin. Its organ and acoustics
are exceptional and attract tourists from all over the country
due to the organ concerts that are held here.
St. Mihail Chursch located in Unirii Square. Its
construction was started in 1350 and lasted for almost two
centuries. It is erected in Gothic style and has mural paintings
from the 15th century.
The Orthodox Cathedral Bisericii Ortodoxe Street. Was
built in 1795 and it was the first orthodox church to be built
in Cluj. |

Banffi Palace in Cluj was
erected in late baroque style from 1774 to 1785. At present it
shelters the National Art Museum founded in 1951. Here you can
admire 30 paintings made by famous Romanian painter Nicolae
Grigorescu and 18 paintings made by Stefan Luchian. Moreover, here
you can see the works of art made by other renowned Romanian
artists: N. Tonitza, Camil Ressu, Th. Pallady, etc.
"Matei Corvin" House is the oldest lay construction in the
city, built in ghotic style in the 15th century,
initially being an inn. In this house, Matei Corvin was born who
later became king in Hungary (1458- 1490) Nowadays, the plastic arts
institute functions in this building. |
