Brasov Highlights
Brasov was and still is an
important cultural center. Here Deacon Coresi printed the first
books in Romanian.The first Romanian high-school in Transylvania was
founded here in Brasov in 1850 by George Baritiu. Nowadays, Brasov
is a touring center par excellence due to its socio-cultural values
and to the fact that it represents a starting point mountaineering
trips in the surrounding areas. Moreover, in Brasov the music
festival "Cerbul de Aur" takes place every year.
Monuments
St. Bartholomew Church- The oldest historical monument in
Brasov. Built in 1223, roman architecture. St. Nicholae Church
- Dated on historical monuments since 1292, the church was built in
stone in 1495 with the support of the leaders of all Romanian
provinces. Its impressive size dominates the oldest part of the city
- Scheii Brasovului. First Romanian School - Built only
meters away from the St. Nicolae's Church. The first historical
monuments proving the existence of the school go back to 1495. Most
of the first printed books in Romanian were printed here by Coresi.
The tourists of Brasov must visit the school were they can actually
sit 19th century student desks. Ecaterina’s Gate -
Ecaterina's Gate is one of the oldest original entrance gates in
Brasov. You can see it near Poarta Schei. |

Black Church - Initially known as St. Mary's Church, the
building was partly destroyed after the great fire in 1689. Built
around 1380, the Black Church is the most representative gothic art
monument in Romania. If you are in Brasov don't miss the weekly
organ concerts performed here on the largest organ in South-East
Europe. The largest bell in the country is in the 65m high tower.

The Old City Hall - Initially
built as a watch tower, once the city has developed the building was
turned into the city hall. Starting with 1420, when the building was
renovated, the local council meetings and all the trials were held
here. Nowadays the building hosts the History Museum of Brasov.
The Citadel of Brasov - Built on the top of a hill starting
with 1395, the citadel was one of the strongest defensive citadels
in Transylvania. Today you can have here a lovely Romanian cuisine
dinner or just enjoy looking at the collection of medieval weapons
found there.
Weaver’s Tower - The Weavers' Tower is one of the seven
initial watchtowers built round the city walls. The tower is now a
museum and can be visited on the way up on Tampa Mountain.

Bran Castle |
Bran Castle -
Situated 30 km away from Brasov. The Bran Castle is mostly known for
its beauty and the beautiful landscapes and for the legend of
Count Dracula. Vlad the Impaler (known as Dracula), Wallachia’s
ruler, kept the relations with Transylvania, but no source mentioned
its stay in the castle. The first attestation of the Bran Castle is
a document issued on the 19th of November 1377 by
Ludovic I D’Anjou. The castle had a guard made of archers |
Surroundings
The Tampa Mountain is the symbol of Brasov. A great tourist
destination, the top of the mountain (995m) offers a great view of
the old Brasov.
Postavarul Mountain is not only the best skiing destination
in Romania with its Poiana Brasov resort, but also a good place for
studying various plants and wild animals such as bear and deer. |
