Casinos
Some of them are in very beautiful historical buildings, and
they often have genuinely good restaurants, open well into the early
hours. The most attractive are the Casino Palace, incorporating the
Casa Vernescu restaurant, in the Lens-Vernescu palace at Calea
Victoriei 133 (tel 01/231 0220), and the Victoria Casino (tel 01/659
4913) and Simfonia restaurant at Calea Victoriei 174

Classical music and drama
Most of the theatres and
concert halls are closed through the summer. Information should
be available through your hotel reception desk, or check the listings
magazines. Bucharest's cultural forte is classical music , and
several internationally acclaimed musicians have cut their teeth with
the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, which plays in the Romanian
Athenaeum at Str.
The city’s most
high-profile cultural event is the Georges Enescu
International Festival (September-October 2005), when classical
orchestras and chamber music groups from around the world play in the
city’s best concert halls .
A festival of piano music, named after the pianist Dinu
Lipatti, has become established in early May. The finest operatic
performances are staged at the Opera Româna, B-dul Kogalniceanu 70
(tel 01/314 6980), with other productions taking place at the Teatrul
Opereta next to the National Theatre at B-dul Balcescu 2 (tel 01/313
6348). Performances are lavish with fantastic sets and huge casts;
tickets cost about $1-2 from the venues' box offices. The Sala Radio,
at Str. Berthelot 62 (tel 01/314 6800), plays host to some
high-quality concerts. Outdoor concerts are held in Cismigiu Gardens
and Tineretului Park during the summer.
Concert halls :
Atheneul Roman : Str. Franklin 1
One
of the most magnificent places to hear classical music performed is at
the Ateneul Roman, Strada Franklin 1 (tel: (01) 315 6875). This
splendid 19th-century building – looking like Bucharest’s answer to
London’s St Paul’s Cathedral – presents a fairytale backdrop, splendid
acoustics and plays host to the George Enescu Philharmonic
Orchestra and other top performances. The lobby has a beautifully
painted ceiling decorated in gold leaf and curved balconies cascading
in ringlets of spiral staircase. A ring of pink marble columns is
linked by flowing arches, where elaborate brass lanterns hang like
gems from a necklace. Inside the concert hall, voluptuous frescoes
cover the ceiling and walls. This remarkable décor usually can only be
viewed by concert-goers.
